Project Benefits

The Mavisbank Restoration Project will bring the house and estate back into integrated use and management for public enjoyment. It will:

  • Preserve Scotland’s historic environment by consolidating the exterior of the House and restoring the pavilions as a first step towards full restoration.
  • Manage the Polices with a view to bringing back the significance of the landscape in accordance with philosophies and theory informed by Sir John Clerk’s poem “The Country Seat”.
  • Begin to re-establish the formal relationship between the House and landscape by re-uniting the ownership of the House and Policies under single ownership and management.
  • Support community engagement and local regeneration by opening up Mavisbank as a community park and an important element of the Lothians green network creating jobs and increasing visitor spend.
  • Utilise the opportunities the site and its history presents for active learning and training.
  • Provide a sustainable, economically viable long-term use for the House and Policies.
